Good fun at the Maritime Festival
Steveston, yet again you’re good to us. Pretty much a perfect West Coast summer evening last night as we took the stage just after 8 o’clock in the Britannia Heritage Shipyards in Richmond.
Three different crews of youth dancers opened up for us. French-Canadian ladies were dressed in neon parrot-pirate costumes.
We played two sets last night. The first was for the funding sponsors of the Richmond Maritime Festival, and we played just outside of a restored Chinese Bunkhouse. Underpaid Chinese men would be camped out here while doing the vigorous work of canning that fueled young Richmond’s economy at the turn of the century. It’s a fabulous building, beautifully restored.
Also, we were lucky enough to hear a city councilor use the word “heritage” about twelve times in a three-minute speech. It was great.
