Headwater - we’re a band from Vancouver, BC. We play a lot of stringed instruments. Guitar, mandolin, banjo, steel guitar, bass – also we hang out with drummers who play with us.
We like to sing harmonies together.
Headwater started out in the early 2000′s when Jonas and Matt left their rock ‘n roll days behind to play acoustic music. We started writing tunes that we thought people would sing along to, move their bodies to, and really enjoy. Tim and Pat (steel and bass) joined a couple of years later – we love each other.
Our new album PUSH comes out on May 4th.
It is a departure from the roots/folk stylings we’re known for, into some decidedly “pop” territory. We wrote some tunes that just called for really carefully crafted production, and I, personally, think we hit the nail on the head. We’ve moved steel guitar, mandolin and banjo into some really neat textural roles – using them almost like synth’s. At the heart of the new sound are great vocal harmonies, seriously catchy choruses and some tasty grooves. Nods of the head to Tom Petty and Peter Gabriel. And Katy Perry. And Rick Rubin.
We released two albums My Old Friend (2006) and Lay You Down (2009). We toured Canada and Europe extensively playing the folk circuit. Hundreds of great shows later, we really have a musical fellowship that makes us all happy. Putting all of us together on stage – man, it’s what makes our lives so awesome.
Experimentation, improvisation, wild jam-outs, furniture as percussion, howling, dancing – that’s what fuels our live sets.
So what we’ve done over the past year is bring back our rock roots. Fueled the fires. Plugged in. Electrified. We debuted the new sound at the Atlin Arts and Music Festival in July 2011 – it’s our favourite festival ever. The results were staggering.
We’re all very excited to launch PUSH out into the world on May 4th. Please enjoy!
